Professor Russell Viner elected next RCPCH President

Professor Viner is an academic paediatrician and adolescent physician at the UCL Institute of Child Health in London, working clinically in paediatric and adolescent diabetes at University College Hospital. He was until recently the Clinical Director for Children and Young People in Healthy London Partnerships. He is the Director of the Department of Health Obesity Policy Research Unit (OPRU), a NIHR Senior Investigator, and has worked as a consultant for the Departments of Health and of Education in the UK, for Public Health England and for the WHO internationally. He was the senior editor of the RCPCH's State of Child Health Report 2017 and is currently the RCPCH Officer for Health Promotion.

Commenting on his appointment, Professor Viner, said:

“It’s a huge honour to take on the role of President and to have the membership put trust in me. I’m looking forward to working with members and staff to improve outcomes for our children and young people and to enhance working lives for our members."

"I am pleased to congratulate Professor Russell Viner and welcome him as RCPCH President-Elect. RCPCH strives to improve the health and wellbeing of all infants, children and young people. Russell will bring to the role his academic and clinical expertise in the care of teenagers and young people, and his ongoing experience as RCPCH Officer for Health Promotion."

Dame Mary Marsh, Chair of the RCPCH’s Board of Trustees, said:

Professor Viner will take up the role on 14 March, and serve 3 years. Until then, he will sit on the College’s Council and Trustee Board as President Elect.

The new Vice President for Education and Professional Development has also been elected. Dr Camilla Kingdon, a consultant neonatologist at Guy’s at St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and Evelina London will commence her role in July 2018.
